What is financial aid and how can it help me?
Financial aid includes grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs that help cover the cost of tuition, books, and other education-related expenses. San Jacinto College’s financial aid office is here to guide you through available options and how to apply.
How do I apply for financial aid?
Start by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. List San Jacinto College's school code, 003609, on the FAFSA so the college
can receive your application results. Once submitted, your application will be processed,
and you’ll be notified of any follow-up steps.
When should I submit my FAFSA?
FAFSA opens every year on October 1 for the next academic year. You must reapply each
year — even if you received aid before. Apply early to maximize your eligibility and
keep up with annual deadlines.
Should I apply for aid even if I think I won't qualify?
Yes. Students may think they don't qualify for aid, but don’t realize there are some
resources available regardless of need. The FAFSA form is free. Visit your campus financial aid office for assistance with the application process.
Are there income cutoffs for financial assistance?
No. Applicants are reviewed individually based on several factors and the formula
changes every year.
Is financial aid available for undocumented or international students?
Financial aid is generally not available for undocumented students. Most student aid,
including federal student aid, requires the recipient to be a US citizen or permanent
resident (green card holder) or an eligible non-citizen. Limited state aid funds may
be available using the San Jacinto College institutional application for TPEG funds.
How do I know if I am independent or dependent?
When you fill out the FAFSA, you will be asked a series of questions to help determine your dependency status.
If the FAFSA determines that you are dependent (parental information on the FAFSA)
for financial aid purposes, but you have unusual circumstances, please contact the financial aid office or complete the unusual circumstances form.
How do I apply for a student loan at San Jacinto College?
To be considered for a federal student loan, you must first complete the FAFSA and list San Jacinto College (School Code: 003609). Once your FAFSA is processed
and your financial aid file is complete, you will receive information about requesting
assistance from the federal direct loan programs. We also have more information about
the types of loans offered.
What if I have questions or need help?
You can contact the Financial Aid Office by phone at 281-998-6150 or by email at FinAid@sjcd.edu. You can also visit a campus office during listed hours or participate in a live
chat or scheduled appointment.
What financial aid programs are available?
San Jac offers a variety of aid including:
There are also college-specific grants and programs available depending on eligibility.
Who is eligible for federal financial aid?
To qualify for federal aid, you must:
Do I need to be enrolled before applying for aid?
No. You don’t have to be accepted to San Jacinto College before submitting your FAFSA.
However, you must be admitted and enrolled in eligible courses to receive financial
aid funds.
What is verification and am I selected?
Verification is a process where the Financial Aid Office checks your FAFSA data for accuracy.
If selected, you will receive instructions on what additional documents are needed
to complete your aid application. Aid is not disbursed until verification is completed.
How do I maintain my financial aid eligibility?
To keep your aid:
Can I receive financial aid at more than one school at a time?
No, you can only receive financial aid at one college at time. Failure to inform financial
aid about aid received at another college during the year can result in loss of aid
that must be paid back.
How will I know if I’ve been awarded aid?
Once your FAFSA is processed and, if applicable, your file is verified, you’ll receive
an award notification email to your San Jac email address. You can also view your
award details online through your student portal. Learn more about what happens after you submit the FAFSA.
How and when do I receive my financial aid funds?
Aid is disbursed three times each semester once enrollment and eligibility are confirmed.
Awards are first applied to tuition and fees, with remaining funds refunded according
to your refund preference. Check out how your financial aid package is determined.
What is a credit balance refund and when will I receive it?
A credit balance refund occurs when your financial aid exceeds your tuition, fees,
and any authorized charges on your student account at San Jacinto College. After your
aid is applied to your balance, any remaining eligible funds are refunded to you to help cover other educational expenses such as books, supplies, transportation,
and living costs.
Refunds are processed after financial aid has been disbursed and attendance has been confirmed. Processing times may vary each semester. To avoid delays, be sure your enrollment is finalized, all required documents are submitted, and your refund preference is set up with BankMobile.
What if my financial aid is not enough to cover my bill?
If your financial aid awards are not enough to pay for your college charges (tuition,
fees, books, etc.), you are responsible for making other arrangements to cover these
charges. Contact the financial aid office regarding other options or the business office to make a payment or set up a payment plan.
How will an outside scholarship affect my financial aid award?
Financial aid awards are based on a calculated financial need, taking into consideration
the combination of all educational resources. Need-based aid cannot exceed a student’s
calculated need. Due to financial aid displacement, it may be necessary to reduce your financial aid, especially loans, if an outside
scholarship arrives after our aid has been awarded, processed, or disbursed.
What if my family circumstances change after I apply?
If your situation changes after filling out the FAFSA, contact the financial aid office. You may submit a request for Special Circumstances with appropriate supporting documentation
What happens if I defer or change my schedule?
Your financial aid eligibility is based on your enrollment status (number of credits and attendance). If you drop
or add classes, your award may be recalculated, and your refund amount may change.
Can I appeal if my aid is reduced or denied?
Yes. If your financial situation changes or you fail to meet SAP standards, you may appeal for reconsideration. Contact the financial aid office for guidance on appeals or special circumstances.
